Marton Mere is a small lake, approximately 1/4 mile long that sits hidden between the M55 motorway to the south and Stanley Park to the north. |
 |
At one time the mere was over a mile in length. The whole area was marshy and boggy and
would not drain until the Victorian engineers set to work not much more than a hundred years
ago. The area even now is known as Marton 'Moss'.
The mere has no great publicity, is not signposted and has been the subject of much debate
in the town. It is a wildlife haven and the majority of the townsfolk want to keep it that
way.
You cannot drive to it and that alone in these days is enough to keep it fairly quiet! |
| On a warm summers day, with birds wheeling and darting to catch flies in the
air above the mere, and with the water teeming with fish fry, it is easy to forget that you
are in Blackpool.
Only the sight of the Tower on the horizon can remind you that you are
almost within earshot of the bingo callers and amusements of the brightest resort in England! |
