The Blackpool Tower Circus

The circus ring, set between the four legs of the Tower itself. Photography was allowed in the circus as long as flash was not used.

Mary Chipperfield is the lady below left, the circus having a long relationship with the famous Chipperfield circus family. These photos were taken in the late 1970s before the family ran into trouble over a maltreated chimpanzee.

For large cats a circular cage was erected, filling the entire ring.
The finale of every show was based around the water feature. The circus ring could be lowered to allow thousands of gallons of water to rush in, with lights and fountains adding to the effect.

The taking up of the heavy matting that was used instead of the traditional sawdust was often turned into a competition between two teams of extremely hard working stage hands.

On the evening of the switch-on of Blackpool Illuminations the Tower normally plays host to the BBC Radio 2 show "Friday Night Is Music Night ".

It is normally a superb night out and the circus auditorium is always filled to capacity. We have been for the past two years running and fully intend to go again!

Cyril Stapleton conducts with gusto and Gerard Kenny walks off to applause.
