This shows the Central
Pier, originally called The South Jetty until a third pier was built further south...
It has a rather unmissable Ferris wheel built on the deck. The original Ferris wheel in
Blackpool was built in 1896 and was fully 220 feet high.
This was similar to the famous Vienna wheel, with carriages carrying 30 people. |

It was a gigantic flop, being too close to the Tower,
which was twice the height, and moving so slowly around that passengers soon became bored. It
was dismantled in 1928.
So far, the Central Pier Big Wheel has not shared this lamentable fate!

The piers of Blackpool have a fascination for children,
not only because of the amusements and rides but for the simple pleasure of walking high above
the beach or the sea.
Adults can sit and catch the sun's rays, whilst keeping an eye on their offspring.
As do all the piers now, the Central Pier has an amusement arcade fronting the Promenade.
The lights and noise tempt visitors onto the pier. Well, that's the theory anyway! Either
the noise attracts them or they try to get away from the noise of the Promenade by coming onto the pier! |

The Central Pier 1977. Gypsy Petulengro has her stall near the entrance to the pier,
carrying on a tradition started a hundred years ago by the Boswell family at South Shore. |
