John Burke's Blackpool

I have pages on a number of different places, available from my homepage and people often assume that I live in the area of whichever page they have visited. But I live in Bispham just to the north of Blackpool. My photos were taken over the years - I hope you enjoy them!

Feedback

"Glad to see you on Flickr, John. I've been a big fan of the Blackpool Pleasure Beach shots at your website for a few years. I'm particularly fond of the 1970's and 1980's shots, and it's great to see bigger versions here. - Yorkie"

"This is a great set of photographs John, bringing back lots of memories and feelings as I holiday'd in Blackpool every year with my family during the 70's and 80's. Your Blackpool webpage, with it's building work photos is fantastic to view and read, with all manner of interesting snippets. - Forgotten Memories"

Fran, myself and my brother, Frank on the Log Flume, 1976It shows how awake I am... I live here and yet had to be told this story by Jill Tengrove who lives the other side of the world in Australia!

Apparently as the Pleasure Beach drained the lake under the now demolished Log Flume, they found an earring lost by Marlene Deitrich who was riding the then new Big Dipper in 1934.

Also found were a wig and a bra - it's not known whether she took the latter off to look for the earring as she went round the ride... BBC News Coverage

Part of a lost BlackpoolSomeone who did just that is Margot Carey, who sent in a memory about Blackpool which led me to this piece of Blackpool's heritage on the North Pier.

To find out what it is and to see some of Margot's photos of Blackpool in the 1940s and 1950s, take a look at my blog, starting with the entry - Treasure Hunt at the bottom.
