Putting Up The Illuminations

The work of putting up the Illuminations starts early in the year and carries on indefinitely, testing and bulb replacing until the Switch On itself and beyond.

Around 375,000 lamps are used for the display, each one being washed, painted and tested by just two men once the displays end in November and then being replaced into the new displays as the two start at Starr Gate at the South and work their way northwards during the season.

The crowns were made for the 1977 display which coincided with Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee.
