John Burke's Lake District

The Lake District is an area of outstanding natural beauty, an hour and a half's drive north of Blackpool.

Lake Windermere, at ten miles long, is England's longest lake. It is only one of many lakes and tarns in the National Park. Many are simply termed "Water" as in Derwent Water.

The Lake District was home to many of England's finest poets, artists and authors. William Wordworth lived at Dove Cottage, Grasmere (left) and is buried in the churchyard in that village. Next to the cottage, which has been preserved with some of Wordsworth's belongings, is a small museum which also acts as a ticket office for the cottage.
There are lots of different forms of transport in "The Lakes"!

At Ravenglass a miniature railway takes visitors on a woodland and mountainside ride. The railway was not constructed with tourists in mind but was built originally to take miners from their village to their place of work.

Ambleside is at the head of Lake Windermere. Parking is at a premium - as it is most places in the Lakes - but the place is a delight. A walk uphill of half a mile brings you to Stock Ghyll Force - a series of waterfalls.
