John Burke's Cleveleys

Cleveleys. The tramway transfers to the middle of the roadway as it reaches the pitch and putt course at Anchorsholme.

Here a Twin-Car unit crosses Victoria Road - the centre of Cleveleys. Thornton is a little further inland, though the two are generally known as Thornton Cleveleys. The roadway itself moves away from the sea front on its way towards Fleetwood.

These first two photos were taken in 1977. The traffic lights have a different arrangement now, so if you are heading for Fleetwood - stay in the left hand lane!

Right: a Balloon tram on the fenced tracks in the centre of the dual carriageway.

The Orion Cinema now a Bingo Club and, right, BOC Used Car Showroom.
Victoria Street West, leading to the seafront.

This is Cleveleys' main shopping street and has recently been made one-way to traffic.

Cleveleys has still kept the original fronts to some of the older buildings including the art deco styling to the cafe (left).
At the seafront end of Victoria Street West.
Apart from the pebble beach, sea and some horrendously ugly sea defences, the children's fun fair is the only feature of Cleveleys seafront.
Drive inland in a straight line from the main Promenade area - not easy as it's a one-way street heading to the sea - and you get to Thornton. Here you will find a small craft village around Marsh Mill, a large tower windmill.

You will find enough to keep you amused for a bit and there is a good Brewers Fayre pub/restaurant too. Special events are held here in summer.
