Blackpool Lions Carnival Parades

This is the 1977 Blackpool Lions Carnival. 1977 saw the entire country decked out in patriotic red white and blue for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II whose popularity at that point would have rivalled that of her ill-fated daughter-in-law 20 years later.

Blackpool was no exception and bunting and special displays were in evidence throughout the 1977 season.

There was a special effort made that year in the construction and decoration of the carnival floats. I'm trying to remember why an eight-year-old Ford Escort should be carried about on a tractor, but I'm afraid I give up... The couple below left were from one of Blackpool's cabaret bars.
I took photos of the 1981 parade in black and white. The Lions Carnival includes a competition for jazz bands - which in this sense means lots of baton twiddling and thigh-slapping girls, either freezing in the winds off the sea, or roasting in thick Yeoman Beefeater costumes and fainting on the Promenade...
Luckily as I took these photos, the girls (and pipers) resisted all temptation to fall in a heap in the middle of the road...
